Did you know...

- that WestEnd was built in 14 months and opened its doors on 12 November 1999?

- that it has been open for 10 years and has had over 200 million visitors?

- that the building of the Western Railway Station was designed by the Gustav Eiffel Office and was built between 1874 and 1877 to honour the designer of the Eiffel tower and this is why the entrance at the Western Station is called the Eiffel Gate, while all other streets and squares are named after famous Hungarians?

- how the 18 famous Hungarians relate to the characteristics of the building? For example the Underpass Level only gives room to writers and poets. It is intentional that the largest number of gold and jewellery stores are located on Arany János Small Boulevard, (named after János Arany, the famous poet, “arany” meaning “gold” in Hungarian). Cafeterias can be found on Krúdy Gyula Square; everyone knows that the writer Gyula Krúdy delighted in culinary specialties. Jókai Mór Promenade and the parallel Kölcsey Ferenc Promenade both lead to the Millennium Court.

BBB – the Báthory, Bethlen and Bocskai Promenades are located on the ground floor, named after three of the most significant Hungarian leaders. Eötvös József Promenade is also parallel with Deák Ferenc Promenade named after the “wise man of the country” – also leading to the Millennium Court. Kabos Gate, opening to Váci Road, was named after Gyula Kabos, who lived in the building across the Gate for decades. The Széchenyi Grand Boulevard, named after the “Greatest Hungarian” embraces the ground floor shops up to the Millennium Square. On the cinema level, the largest square was named after George Cukor (Czukor György), a famous and influential Hungarian director, and this is where Baross Gábor Street is situated, towards the railway station (Gábor Baross was the Minister for Transport during the Reform Era of the 19th century). The streets named after famous Hungarian architects, Ödön Lechner, Károly Kós, Mihály Pollack, József Hild, Miklós Ybl and Frigyes Schulek are located on the 1st Floor. A walk in WestEnd is almost a history class. These historic figures are all situated nicely among each other and us.
